ÉDITORIAL
Déjà que j'avais beaucoup de difficulté à accepter l'usage de batailles d'animaux dans les différents festivals en Espagne, à chaque fois que c'est la fête d'un saint quelconque, il faut martyriser des animaux. Voilà qu'une récente photo d'une bataille de chiens dans les rues de Kabul en Afghanistan m'a complètement chavirée.
Vous savez que les musulmans considèrent le chien comme impur et n'en veulent pas comme animal de compagnie. Au lieu de les laisser tranquilles, le fait que ces bonhommes en jupes utilisent des chiens pour leur amusement, pour des concours et des batailles me donne une bonne idée pourquoi ils sont en guerre avec le monde entier.
Serait-ce qu'ils ont un tempérament cruel ou qu'ils n'ont pas de jugeote ?

HORSE RESCUE
This is an amazing video! You may have heard about the herd of horses that were trapped for 3 days on a tiny piece of land in wind and rain in the Netherlands a short while ago? They were trapped on a small piece of land, surrounded by water. Their natural instincts kept them from swimming to solid land from their tiny perch.
There were about 100 horses huddled together against the wind and water. The Nation was mesmerized watching this drama as 18 of the horses perished, while others were slowly weakening.
First the fire department, then the Dutch army, tried to rescue them - both efforts were unsuccessful. Then, with a break in the weather, the water level went down and four women hatched a plan to attempt a rescue by luring the horses into the water.

L'histoire n'est pas aussi romantique. Ces chevaux étaient destinés aux abattoirs italiens, pour la fabrication du salami. Nous avons appris plus tard que ces chevaux appartenaient à un éleveur…. Ils auraient quasiment été mieux de se noyer que de vivre toutes les péripéties d'un transport vers un abattoir italien!!!!
Cette situation a attiré beaucoup d'attention aux Pays-Bas. L'éleveur a reçu des centaines de lettres et des téléphones de bêtises. Ce n'était pas la première fois que le même scénario se produisait et il avait été avisé quelques jours à l'avance de la tempête.
Le parti 'voor de Dieren' (parti pour les animaux), un parti néerlandais qui s'est présenté aux élections du 22 novembre et a même remporté 2 sièges, a ouvert un compte dans le but d'acheter les chevaux.
Mais après ? Comment les garder, les nourrir… ? Une centaine de chevaux ? Et qu'est-ce qui va arriver avec les autres troupeaux de cet éleveur cruel, trop imbécile pour les sauver lui-même ?
Certainement que ces femmes méritent une médaille pour leur acte de bravoure qui avait l'air d'être accompli avec tant de facilité. D'autant plus que l'une d'elle a tombé à l'eau juste avant que les chevaux commencent leur traversée et aurait pu être piétinée. D'ailleurs si vous regardez bien, on n'en compte que trois sur la terre ferme à l'arrivée. Ma supposition est que la quatrième est allée se sécher. Mais les femmes dans le " rescue " c'est comme çà. Ne pensez-vous pas qu'il y aurait là matière à un magnifique scénario de film ?
NEW CENTRE FOR ANIMAL ETHICS AT OXFORD
More than 40 theologians - out of 100 academics from 10 countries - have agreed to become Advisers to the new Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics - to be launched online on Monday (27 November) at www.oxfordanimalethics.com - which aims to put animals on the intellectual agenda.
The Centre is the world's first academy dedicated to the enhancement of the ethical status of animals through academic publication, teaching and research. Academics world-wide from both the sciences and the humanities will be eligible to become Fellows of the Centre. It will act as an international, independent think tank for the advancement of progressive thought about animals.
'There is a strong rational case for animals, which has been recognized over the centuries by academics and philosophers. What is needed is for this rational case to be much better known and there are now signs that progressive thinking is becoming mainstream. Importantly, animals are now recognized as sentient beings in European law; and, in the UK, the most comprehensive - and long overdue - overhaul of animal welfare legislation for almost a century is shortly to be enacted into law.'
'We must strive to ensure animal issues are highlighted and rationally discussed throughout society - we cannot change the world for animals without changing our ideas about them. The Centre will promote ethical attitudes and contribute to informed public debate.'
TRAPPING IN RURAL AREAS AND SUBURBS
We did not research the Quebec by-laws that allow those stupid men to install leghold traps or conibear traps in ditches and fosses near occupied houses and trails where animal lovers let their dogs off leash or cats roam free during the night. Somebody is bound to let us know what they are.
If you are in the habit of letting your dog run in a small forest near your place, the possibility exists that such a trap could be installed and no warning sign posted. We recommend you examine the ditches and river banks near your place before a child or an animal gets hurt.
As prevention, we recommend the reading of the following sites giving you the instructions to release those traps quickly and hopefully save your dog:

Conibears are usually only dangerous IF the caught dog is not quickly released and IF the owner doesn't know the trick of opening them (very hard to pry open with hands, which is unfortunately the first instinct of a novice human encountering them.) Those are two big IFs however, which makes them more dangerous than leghold traps.

LES CANARDS DE CHARLESBOURG
A Charlesbourg, arrondissement de Québec, les employés soufflent la neige dans un ruisseau le long du boulevard Laurentien où " barbottent plusieurs dizaines de canards " qui ont décidé de passer l'hiver avec nous. Ce n'est certainement pas écologique de souffler la neige sale dans un ruisseau mais vous connaissez les fonctionnaires, si ce n'est pas interdit par la loi, c'est permis, même si ce n'est pas intelligent.
Or, le jet de la souffleuse enterre littéralement les canards. Quand ce ne sont que les pieds pris dans la neige dure ce n'est pas si mal puisque M. Henri Paré passe par là pour les secourir. Il se bat depuis des années pour que la Ville arrête de souffler la neige dans le ruisseau. Jacques Perron, porte-parole de la ville de Québec ne le voit pas de cet œil et a prévenu M. Paré (pour ne pas dire menacé) qu'il est interdit à Québec de nourrir les canards et qu'il peut avoir à payer l'amende.
Le Code criminel ne dit-il pas qu'il est interdit de blesser intentionnellement un animal ou un oiseau ? Alors ce que font les employés sur la souffleuse depuis toutes ces années devrait-il être considéré comme un acte de cruauté ? Si vous le pensez…

ANIMA-QUÉBEC
Le mandat d'Anima-Québec viendra à échéance en mars 2007. Nous vous avons déjà demandé d'écrire au Ministre de l'Agriculture pour demander la dissolution de cet organisme pour ses inactions dans la protection des chiens des usines de production.
La réputation du Québec comme capitale des usines à chiots du Canada s'est étendue jusqu'aux Etats-Unis où un journaliste Merritt Clifton du Animal People News a fait sa petite enquête. Il semble que son article de novembre 2006 n'est pas disponible sur leur site www.animalpeoplenews.org
